Easy Flower Box You Can Make Yourself

For a colorful, inexpensive way to add color and beauty to the outside of your house, try this easy to build, classic flower/planter box.
The box itself is simply 5 pieces of wood nailed or screwed together; 1x8's or 1x10's are the most common sizes used for all sides of the box.
Place 1 piece on the bottom. I like to use one 1x10 on the bottom.
Then attach the remaining 4, evenly cut 1x8's, to the side of the 1x10.
Use waterproof silicone or wood glue at all of the joints so that the box is going to be strong enough to hold heavy soil and flower pots that will be placed inside of it.
The ends of the box are just one 1x10 cut in half.
Screw or nail sides and bottom at each end, then to waterproof the inside, you can use roofing asphalt which you can just spread evenly around all of box. You can also place a metal or plastic tray in the bottom if you'd rather.
For a nice appearance and also added protection, you can paint or stain the outside of your flower box to match the paint trim on your house if you'd prefer.
Then just fill your box with whatever happens to grow well in your area. Plants, cactus, petunias, or pansies always look very colorful in the summer and are extremely easy to grow and maintain.
Another great idea that has been used after season end, is to fill the box with seasonal and occasional items like, small pumpkins, dried corn cobs, or even leaves that are turning different colors, could be used for Halloween.
You could even make an arrangement of eucalyptus, flocked holly bush branches, pine tree branches, and large pine cones to fill the inside around the Christmas season.
I hope you try this project, it is so simple.
Enjoy!

I have made a window box like this. I cut decorative designs in the front panel to match the gingerbread design on the house which is a Victorian.
